Ore. Water Detection Story: Where’s The Leak?

ROSEBURG, Ore. — The water department in Roseburg is stumped. It’s been losing 2 million gallons a day to a leak that workers haven’t been able to trace.

Main lines from the water plant have been checked. So have secondary lines to businesses and homes. City workers haven’t found any big pools of water on the ground and say the leak could be in a lot of not-so-obvious places, such as a vacant retail store. A leak detection company from Salem has been engaged, at $1,200 a day.

City officials tell the Roseburg News-Review (http://bit.ly/ySOZ0R ) it’s the second such leak in the 180-mile system. The first was found. Both are believed to be a consequence of last week’s heavy rainfall that stressed the system with a muddy supply and caused reservoir fluctuations.
